Have been receiving this error on my Windows PC. Can anyone help me here? What exactly is the problem?

How to fix sound not working in Windows?

If you are receiving sound not working error in your Windows PC, then first check Settings -System -Sound and make sure the correct output device is selected and the volume isn’t muted. Then run Settings -System -Troubleshoot -Other troubleshooters -Audio -Run. If that doesn’t fix it, update or reinstall the audio driver through Device Manager -Sound, video and game controllers. Also check that your speakers/headphones are properly connected and test another output device to rule out a hardware problem.

It has happened to me when Windows chose another speaker/headphones. I would be right-clicking on the sound icon, selecting Sound settings and selecting the proper output device. I would attempt to restart the Windows Audio service and verify for any new drivers in Device Manager.

My initial step would be to see if it is a problem with all apps or just one. I would then check the volume mixer, output device and audio driver. A fast restart may be the remedy to small issues with Windows, but if that doesn't help I'd go to the Windows Update troubleshooter and look for Windows Update issues.
